Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Football

1. What are the age/grade requirements for football?

Our football program is age based. Division Age is determined by the athlete's age as of July 1st. Tackle is offered in the Fall to athletes ages 7-13. Fall Flex Football is open to athletes age 6 and under.

No prior experience required — beginners are welcome at all levels!

2. Is this flag or tackle football, and when does tackle start?

Our younger division (6U) plays flex football, which was strategically created by former NFL players to offer a level of play that is between flag and tackle. Flex offers a realistic football experience at all levels.

Fall Tackle football begins for our athletes that are 7 years old as of 7/1.  There are no weight limits or weigh-ins at any level.

We are affiliated nationally with American Youth Football (AYF) and locally play other Central Mass teams in the same divisions that we field.

Safety is prioritized with yearly certified coaches, proper technique training, and inspected equipment on a suggested reconditioning cycle.

3. How do I register my child? Is there any paperwork I need to do?

Registration is to be completed online via the league website. All registrations can be found on the home page of the MSYFC.org site.

Be sure to register early to secure your athletes jersey numbers and save with early bird discounts. Spots can be limited at certain levels, especially after deadlines.

Required paperwork items for fall participation:

  • Birth certificate original with a raised seal - This document must be verified by representatives from Central Mass for authenticity. If you have played in a previous fall season, this is not needed.
  • Updated physical form if your athlete's physical was performed in the current year. If the most recent physical was performed in the previous calendar year, the AYF Medical Clearance form must be submitted. (doctor-signed)
  • Completed Year end Report Card with all 4 terms and final grades listed. Save this in a safe place on the last day of school!
  • Official AYF Player Packet signed by both the parent and the athlete.

All paperwork must be completed and verified before participating in practice or games.

4. What is the registration fee, and what does it cover? Do I have to buy raffle tickets?

Flex: $200 / Tackle & Cheer: $250. This registration cost helps to cover league fees, insurance, custom team jersey/uniform parts, team equipment, field rental fees and game expenses. Additional costs may apply for optional team items or fundraising.

Raffle Tickets:

Each family is required to pre-pay a minimum of 5 raffle tickets at $10 each for the season. Proceeds less prizes help to offset the costs of necessary equipment and league dues in an effort to keep registration price point low for all Raiders athletes. You may sell the tickets to family or friends to recoup the cost of the tickets, or you may keep them for yourself. We will pull a $50 winner for every day we practice during our August grind, 20 winners in total!
All raffle entry names must be submitted to the snack shack by August 16th, if you do not turn in names by this date all raffle tickets purchased will be entered into the drawing in your Athletes name.

5. What equipment is provided vs. what do parents provide?

Raiders Provided:

Riddell Speedflex Helmet (loaned), Riddell Pursuit shoulder pads (loaned), custom game jersey (yours to keep), team socks (yours to keep).

Parent provides:

Mouthguard, rubber cleats (not metal), Black integrated tackle pants (any brand - various sizes available in the snack shack for purchase), athletic cup, practice jersey, practice clothes, water bottle and any desired optional items.

Optional items based on athlete preference include gloves, helmet visor (must be clear - not colored/tinted), back plates, guardian caps, chin strap guards, etc.

Confirm with your coach/team for exacts—league provided equipment is inspected for safety and sent out for reconditioning on a schedule as recommended by Riddell.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Football

6. When does the Fall season start/end, and how often are practices?

Practices start mid July for required conditioning hours for all football athletes. Two hours a day / 5 days a week is typical to complete this requirement.

Regular season: August–October/November (8–10 games + possible playoffs) - AYF Nationals in Naples, Florida is in early December, if advanced.
Practices: Team practice schedule will be determined by the head coach of each team. Expect 2–4 days/week, 1.5–2 hours each evening the team meets. Check in with your head coach for team specifics.

Games: Typically fall on Saturday or Sunday for the duration of the season. The full season schedule is determined by Central Mass and cannot be completed until all team books for all Central Mass teams have been certified at August Jamboree.

Please ensure your athlete is available to attend Jamboree to get certified to play for the season.

7. How are teams formed? Are there tryouts?

There are NO tryouts for youth programs—kids are placed on age-appropriate teams based on registration counts, our teams can be combined at various levels where there are not enough athletes to field a full team.

8. Where/when are games played?

One Game per team per week will typically fall on Saturday or Sunday for the duration of the season following the Jamboree which includes holiday weekends. You can expect the typical game season to run to late October/ early November at a minimum including regular season games plus potential championship advancement beyond that. Games are to be played at local to Central Mass league fields in alignment with the team home/away schedule provided by Central Mass.

Game time / day of the week is at the discretion of the hosting association and will be communicated with the team as soon as they are confirmed by the hosting President or Representative.

Please note, season schedule building can begin slowly as all associations must seek approval from their towns and schools to be able to host the various game days, sometimes with several games needing to be hosted.

While last minute changes are something we try to avoid at all costs, please understand that several factors can play into an unwanted change including changes to High School scheduling which takes precedence over all youth programs. We ask for your patience and grace if this does occur at any point of the season, we will communicate changes to head coaches as they are received and do all that we can to minimize family frustration.

9. Is football safe for my child?

Safety is the top priority: All Coaches complete required yearly certifications, techniques emphasize proper form, and gear is certified/inspected. Please discuss concerns with coaches or the board as they arise.

10. What’s the parent time commitment?

Moderate to high: Attend practices/games, volunteer (e.g., field setup, concessions), help with transportation/snacks. Parent involvement keeps costs down and supports the athlete, the team and the program. Additionally, please consider joining one of our Committees to be able to help our program grow smoothly together. We are all volunteers and we could always use more help, these are the beginning stages of our athletes glory days, let's build something special! After all, the youth football experience is what you make of it for your athletes team, the goal is to create a very memorable experience for all!!

11. Can my child join with no experience?

Yes! The focus is on fun, fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship—coaches teach everything from basics. Do all that you can to make attending conditioning camp and all team practices / events a priority to be able to continue the growth of your athlete.

12. Who do I contact for more questions?

Email the league, check the website, or reach out via social media. Our coaches are available during registration events and gear handouts. We will get you in contact with the right person if you just send us a quick note! President@msyfc.org

13. What is your policy for inclement weather?

We are required by Central Mass to measure the WBGT during the summer months on days of heat advisory. The WBGT measures several factors that will determine if it is safe for us to practice, we do not make a determination based on temperature. This will be measured one hour before the start of practice and adjustments will be made accordingly. Practices and Games will continue in the rain (or snow) but will be paused or cancelled if there is thunder or lightning in the area. This call will be made by the Referees on game days.
